Belmont S.P.O.R.T.
(Special Programs Organized for Recreation Time)
A year round program to provide activities for individuals with special needs.
Participants of all ages and levels are welcome to enroll. The Towns of Belmont
and Watertown, user fees and donations fund the program. Dedicated volunteers
enable the S.P.O.R.T. Program to offer many outstanding programs at nominal
fees. We promise continued excellence in recreation programming for individuals
with special needs.
Registration Information
Welcome to the start of the 2008-09 season for Belmont S.P.O.R.T.
To make registering for programs easier and to better plan your fall and winter
schedules, we will register now for programs through the end of March.
We encourage you to plan ahead. Register early as programs will fill up and
space is limited.
Be sure to provide us with up to date contact information such as address, phone
and e-mail address. These are helpful in allowing us to notify participants of
changes and/or cancellations.
IMPORTANT
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND STAFF
Always be sure that there is an instructor or coach at a program before you drop
off
an athlete. Also, please arrive on time to pick up an athlete at the end of a
program
or event. There should be no instance where an athlete is left unsupervised.

Saturday Mini-Camp
Held at the Belmont United Methodist Church, 421 Common St. Belmont and offering
a
wide variety of crafts, sports, games, cooking and music. AH activities are
geared to the
levels of participants and the hours are flexible to accommodate other Saturday
programs.

Time Out
A fiji-in program open to Floor Hockey
players and Mini-Camp participants who are en-
rolled in swimming lessons. Enjoy some free time with friends between programs.
Bring
your lunch, maybe a favorite CD or book, enjoy making a simple craft or just
hang out
chatting with friends for an hour or so. Saturday mini-camp staff will chaperon
the hour.

Candlepin Bowling
League
Teams of 8 players bowl in this
non-competitive league for times s, skill development and
the opportunity to have fun with friends. Parents and friends are encouraged to
assist in
the league by scorekeeping.
Saturday mornings from 9-10:30 a.m. at Lanes & Games on Rte 2 in Cambridge. For
those needing transportation, a bus will leave from the Phillips School in
Watertown at
8:45 a.m. We will provide transportation to other Saturday programs from Lanes
and
Games.

Floor Hockey
Played on Saturdays and/or Wednesdays
at the United Methodist Church, 421
Common St, floor hockey is a sport similar to street hockey but played indoors
with a felt donut shaped puck passed using straight sticks.
Interested athletes of all ability levels should attend try-outs on Saturday,
Oct. 25
from 10:45 a.m.-12 noon. For ages 8 and over.
All Players must supply and wear their own helmets and gloves.

Ice Skating

Jean Giblin Raftery will be back to teach basic skating skills and
also coach for Special Olympics competition in figure and speed
skating. With an eager group of volunteers and some special supports
to help with balance, we're sure everyone will have a great time. At the
Belmont Indoor Rink on Concord Ave from *12 noon -1 p.m.
For your safety, helmets must be worn!

Music and Munchies
Combines the best of Lip Sync and Cooking Light. Participants will
prepare light and nutritious snacks to nibble on while socializing with
friends or singing Karaoke. Bring a favorite CD and we'll provide the
rest. Thursday nights beginning in March at the Protestant Guild, 411

Nordic Skiing
At the Leo J. Martin Golf Course for
skiers ages 8 and over, Tuesdays beginning
January 6, 2009 from 6:30-8 p.m. This program is open to skiers who are new to
the sport or more experienced skiers who want to compete at winter games.
Training is provided for athletes wishing to compete.
Please note that there is a cost of $5. per week for
equipment rental if needed.

Alpine Skiing
At Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford,
MA for six Saturday nights beginning
January 11, 2009. Bob Hanson, an experienced Special Olympics coach will train
and coach athletes for Winter Games competition.
This program is open only to athletes wanting to train and compete in the
Special
Olympics Winter Games.
Transportation will be arranged by Bob
Hanson before the start of the program.

Water Aerobics
This program will help you feel fit and
slim down while having a lot of fun.
Great music will help motivate you through this one hour long class held at the
Fernald School pool on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Dance Like a Star
If you like Abba and want to learn jazz
and hip hop with other popular dance
routines, this program is for you! Jen Bowen is a professional dance instructor
and will teach you in easy to follow steps. This class was so much fun last year
that we are bringing it back for an encore performance. Held Thursday nights
at Belmont High School from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Nutrition and Cookings
Light
Lose weight, eat healthier and enjoy
your food more. Get nutrition counseling,
cook simple recipes and form an exercise plan. There will be a fun exercise rou-
tine before cooking each night. We'll have our own version of the Biggest
Loser with a prLze for the person who loses the most weight at the end of the
session. Mondays at the United Methodist Church, 421 Common St. Belmont
from 6:45-8 p.m.

Special Olympics
Basketball
For athletes ages 8 and over. Weekly
practice will focus on skill development
and teams will be formed according to abilities. Each team will be assigned a
practice time and all teams will play games. Divisioning will be by age and
ability.
Important: Opening practice is on Saturday, November 1, 2008
at Belmont High School from 10:45 a.m.-12 noon
Special Olympics Soccer
Weekly Practices include drills and
scrimmages. Athletes will be divided into teams based on skill
assessments. Assessments will be made at the first practice.
Ages 8 and over on Sundays at the Wellington School Field in Belmont from
3:30-4:30 p.m.

Fitness Mania
At the Belmont High School Weight Room,
Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. We will work out with
players from the Belmont High Football Team.

Swimming Lessons
At the Belmont High School Pool on
Saturdays. Class time depends on your level, see table be-
low for details. Certified instructors and volunteers will help you refine your
technique or get you
started on the basics of swimming during this 30 minute class.
Swimmers must be able to dress themselves or have a parent/staff person to help.
Our staff
does not monitor the locker rooms.
Be aware of your food intake before lessons.
Toileting accidents affect the entire community.
